philip simkowitz (Tuesday, 27 November 2007) Rating: Before Gearhead Records released YELLOW FEVER BLUES, the Spunks on the heels of 2006's Typhoon Kamkaize Tour, put out this DIY CD, BORN TO BE MILD. It actually captures what the Spunks sound like live. Giving that I have seen this band a half a dozen times since January 2006 I can make this comment without reservation. Many, if not all the songs on this disc were staples in their live set. The only element missing that distinguishes this from a live recording is the on-stage banter from Al Batross, the hardest entertaining drummer to play the New York area. Inbetween songs where he is pounding his drum kit to death, he rants about his two Japanese bandmates. Since the Spunks separted in mid-2007 they will be sorely missed in clubs like BPM and the KNITTING FACTORY. Let's cross our fingers and hope for a reunion. rn
