tokyo pinsalocks & Sakura Madams live @ Knitting Factory NYC
Written by Hayden
Saturday, 01 March 2008

Karaterice & JapanFiles have joined forces to present tokyo pinsalocks from Japan.

tokyo pinsalocks

Formed in Tokyo in 2000, tokyo pinsalocks fuse fresh rhythms with the psychedelic vocal stylings of singer/keyboardist Naoko to create a retro-futuristic new-wave meltdown.

Since their formation, tokyo pinsalocks have toured all across Japan, including Sapporo's revered Rising Sun Rock Festival. In February 2007 they took their music to England for a week-long tour, gaining them an instant British fanbase.

In 2008, they were nominated for Best All-Girl Band in the Shojo Beat magazine Japanese Music Awards.

tokyo pinsalocks are:

Hisayo (bass, backing vocals) – Naoko (vocals, keyboard) – Reiko (drums, programming)

"tokyo pinsalocks offer tripped-out psychedelic pop that recalls Jane's Addiction and Lush in equal parts" – Daniel Robson, Disorder Magazine

"Keyboard-led pop sensation tokyo pinsalocks play danceable, rhythmic pop with nary a guitar nor agenda in sight" – Neo Magazine

Sakura Madams

Sakura Madams is the power funk musical project from singer / songwriter / bass vixen Yukino.  Sakura Madams music represents the primal yet sensual vibes of Asian women as related through everyday experiences.

Sakura Madam's primary line-up is comprised of Yukino on bass and vocals; Hitomi on drums and back-up vocals; and Nao on guitar. Each member brings a diverse musical background to the group. Yukino sang in numerous pop, rock & funk bands in Tokyo, Hitomi played in a girls punk band while Nao grew up playing folk songs. This diversity fuels the funk rocket that can only be Sakura Madams.

Poison Ivy League

Since early 2000, Jack Dourakos and Joe Orlowski have been fine tuning their hard hitting rock machine The Poison Ivy League. Combining hefty rock riffs with a songwriting knack for the pop hook, Poison Ivy League finds a home nestled somewhere between the Melvins and the New Pornographers. The sound is dense with thick guitars that glisten a Helmet-like sheen, topped with a syrupy sweetness of My Bloody Valentine, and eaten with the intense ferocity of the Pixies. Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, PIL have been packing clubs in both NYC and Boston. The live show experiece features three part harmonies backed by blistering guitar, thunderous bass and propulsive drumming courtesy of the most dedicated drummer in all of New York, Dan Paquin. They signed to Filthy Schoolgirls in early 2005 and immediatley released a 4-song EP "The Future of Intamacy". They are currently working on their follow up, a full length to be released later this year.
