They were here for a 3-day tour in NYC and LA. I managed to catch up with them at North Six. Thanks for Julie Lichtenstein in getting the interview and Sammy from Destroyder for being the gracious interpreter

Briefly introduce yourself
This is Kyono (vocal)

What’s the meaning behind Mad Capsule Market?
We gave the priority to the sound and impression of the word, rather than its meaning. We wanted something bizarre and unique which would stay in one’s head. Sometimes, we look back and says “humm, was it too much?!”. But it seems that people thinks it’s interesting so far. So, I guess it’s working well.

Which album represents the band’s musical progression?
I think “4 Plugs” (Jan. 1996 released in Japan) was a sort of the turning point for us, and we grasped the direction of where the MCM would go. The sound is getting heavier comparing to the previous ones. Also, we can’t keep “OSC-DIS” out of the discussion on MAD sound. It’s one of the best album to represent our recent work, and the first one released in overseas. We play a lot of songs from OSC-DIS. It has the experimental factors, and is very interesting to see our musical development.

How did the collaboration with Alec Empire come about?
We really liked ATR. So, we contacted him/his management and sent our stuff. We were very excited when we got an OK.We performed together in the Fuji Rock Festival (Japan) and Korean Festival. We received the final material then. That’s how it came out.

The band has been around for 12 years and only went through very few members change. How do you keep the chemistry together?
We inspire and motivate each other. It’s the key to grow as the band as well.

It’s been a while since the last US tour (1998). What took so long?
We’re just totally occupied with various activities, like events, album release, Japan tour, etc, etc. We’ve also been watching the timing to make the use of our experience from our previous tour. After we signed with the major label, things started moving forward again.
It indeed took more time than we expected, though…

How different/similar do you think of the music scene in Japan and US?
I feel that the speed of the information flow in music scene is getting faster these days. Various style, mixture of different taste, generation, etc. I see some difference in regards to culture, history, attitude (mentality?), but after all, no border line for music.

Name some bands that have influenced the band.
Japanese band: Oburadako, Gauze,
Western : Cross, ATR, Public Enemy, SOD, Beasty Boys, Dub War, Rage Against The Machine, and other 70’s punk + 80’s techno/new wave + late 80’s Japanese indies bands. Too many to write all!

What do you usually do on tour?
As for staging, we’ve been using laser beams (depending on the song) and some films/graphics on screen these days. Unfortunately our overseas stage is very limited at this point, but we would like to do it in full-scale one day.

Describe the experience of being the first Asian band to play at Ozzfest.
I was so excited when I heard the news. Even more excited when I actually stood on the stage! It was first time to perform in front of 50,000 audience. I was so thrilled to see such a huge crowd reaching far behind. I was a bit nervous, but when I saw the audience into our music, I was very happy. I assured that we share that great moment without speaking the same language. The dynamic of the OZZFEST overwhelmed. What a great experience!

What are some of your favorite movies?
Star Wars, Pulp Fiction, Independence Day, Once upon a time in America, and more!

Thank you.
Kyono
