Bleach03 : 3 Girls from Okinawa

Bleach is a girl-trio band from Okinawa. Formed in 1998, they have released two full-length albums and have toured extensively in Japan. They recently had a US tour in which they played at Trash Bar in Brooklyn, NY. Following is an email interview from the show.

 

KR: Introduce yourself please
Kanna(K): G.Vo.Kanna
Shukusuke(SK): Shukusuke of Bass
Sayuri(S): I am Sayuri playing Drum.


KR: What bands are you listening to right now?
K: Nick Cave, Morphine, Iggy Pop
SK: Public Enemy
S: Bump of Chicken, Aerosmith


KR: What was it like to play in Warped Tour (Japan)?
K: Party
SK: Full of joy!
S: We’ve never been that kind of event, so it was fun!


KR: How did you come up with the band’s name?
K: One of a friend named
SK: Friend named, I don’t know the meaning.
S: Friend named, not particular meaning.


KR: Describe Okinawa in three words.
K: Blue, Pain, Smile
SK: Ocean, long life, Military base
S: Ocean, slow, attractive in many meaning


KR: What are some of your favorite movies? (Japanese and non-Japanese)
K; Director: Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton,Takeshi Kitano
SK: Twin Peaks
S: Scissor Hands, Goonies, Radio no Jikan (Japanese)


KR: What’s your favorite venue to play in US?
K: each venue has its own atmosphere
SK: Abbey Lounge in Boston
S: Mercury Entertainment at JAZZ, where we first played on SXSW.


KR: Have you considered of doing an album in English?
K: No
SK: No
S: No, I’ve never thought about it.


KR: What band(s) would you like to tour with? (Japanese and non-Japanese)
K: High-Lows (Japanese), Gorch Fock (Non-Japanese)
SK: Rage Against the Machine
S: Tokyo Pinsalocks, Maximum the Hormon, Gorch Fock


KR: If you can pick one country you’ve never been to, to go on tour, which one would you pick? And why?
K: England
SK: Everywhere, we want to be the band which across the nation and sex.
S: Europe and Australia. My favorite Japanese band played in Australia.


KR: Do you have any plans to come to the US next year? (2005)
K: Yes
SK: Maybe!
S: I want to go!


KR: What is the process of song writing for the band?
K: It’s up to the songs.
SK: Each member brings the song and we jam.
S: Each member brings songs and we all play


KR: What was your first concert? At what age, if you remember?
K: When I was 15, I only remember I was so nervous.
SK: I forgot.
S: When I was 19, it was very small event of the college which I went.


KR: What do you think of the current music scene in Japan?
K: The bands which reach to my heart has decreased.
SK: Very pop and easy to understand.
S: There are many kinds of songs, I like.


KR: What was the defining theme behind the name ‘Canary Empire Strikes Back’?
K: Canary dies easily in the bad air, that means very weak, I want canary and that kind of person to be more wild.
SK: Kanna knows.
S: Please ask Kanna.


KR: Godzilla vs Astro Boy, who wins?
K: Astro Boy!
SK: Astro Boy
S: Astro Boy, he is a kid of science.
